POSITION OVERVIEW

Working closely with several Roulette departments and staff members, the Livestream Coordinator oversees Roulette’s live streaming operations–principally focusing on the capture of 2-4 live performances per week via Roulette’s six-camera robotic system, which is remotely controlled from a studio in Roulette’s basement, for live broadcast and inclusion in Roulette’s online archive.

In addition to serving as the principal director/operator of the robotic camera system for each (or most) performances presented in Roulette’s Fall Season, the incumbent may make recommendations on streaming platforms and engagement, help establish and refine best practices around file storage and the integration of concert footage from the live stream into Roulette’s archive and Vimeo presence, and train additional operators for Roulette’s robotic camera system. The incumbent may also interface with artists and Roulette Tech staff in order to discuss lighting and ways to optimize capture of a variety of dynamic live performances.

This is a part-time, temporary position, active between August and January 2020; it is not eligible for benefits. This is not a remote position; it will require some interaction with Roulette staff and artists and, if Roulette is permitted to present live performances before limited-capacity audiences, it may involve limited contact with the public. Roulette will continue to operate following the guidance issued by the CDC, New York State, and the NYC Department of Health and will utilize industry best practices for infection control in event-based environments, including the use of face coverings and physical distancing.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a seasoned videographer with experience shooting live performance and in-depth knowledge of live streaming platforms. Familiarity with Blackmagic products, including the ATEM-1 Broadcast Panel and ATEM 1 M/E Switcher, as well as Sony BRC-H900 PTZ Cameras and Sony RM-BR300 remote controls, strongly preferred.

The ability to work evenings and weekends is required. The incumbent will be present for most, if not all, performances presented as part of Roulette’s Fall Season, which runs September 24-December 21, 2020, shooting 1-4 performances per week (8-28 total hours/week). Scheduling for the entire season will be confirmed with the Live Stream Coordinator prior to the position start date.

Candidates should be familiar with contemporary experimental music, dance, and media arts and Roulette’s avant garde arts programming in particular.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shoot Roulette’s Fall Season (an average of 2-4 performances per week between September 24 and December 21, 2020) for live stream broadcast using Roulette’s robotic six-camera system–comprised of an ATEM-1 Broadcast Panel and ATEM 1 M/E Switcher; six Sony BRC-H900 PTZ Cameras (four cameras mounted in Roulette’s performance hall and two cameras that can be set up on tripods); and Sony RM-BR300 remote controls.
  • Determine how to shoot a variety of performances for optimal effect. This may entail working with artists and Roulette’s Tech staff before the performance to get a sense of the work and potential limitations (lighting and otherwise). But the Live Stream Coordinator will rarely have the chance to see a full performance before shooting it, so the successful candidate for this role will be expert in Roulette’s camera system and able to draw on its full potential as a documentation and production tool. They will also be an adept and quick decision-maker and have a discerning eye for how to capture different kinds of performances in order to faithfully and engagingly broadcast them to a home audience watching via live stream.
  • Troubleshoot issues with Roulette’s live stream before, during, and after the broadcast, with support from and communication with Roulette’s Tech and Communications teams.
  • Archive live stream performance files–play an active role, with guidance and oversight from other Roulette staff, in developing and executing a process for naming, storing, and backing up files; adding them to Roulette’s online archive; and organizing them in Roulette’s Vimeo account.
  • Help train additional remote camera operators.
  • Make recommendations for improved technical capacity and audience-engagement for Roulette’s nascent live stream program, including considerations like embedding logos and prompts to donate in broadcasts.
